Sharing the Joy of Music

Nicholas has been teaching Suzuki Piano Method from his home studio in Oaklyn since 2007. His inspiration came from watching his own sons learn violin and cello through Suzuki an experience that revealed not only the power of learning by ear, but also the warmth, joy, and sense of community that the Suzuki approach fosters.

Character First, Always

Teaching Philosophy

The Suzuki Method puts character first. Dr. Suzuki believed that the goal of music education is not simply professional skill but the development of the whole child. That philosophy, teaching for the heart and the mind guides Nicholas’s studio to this day.

In Nurtured by Love, Dr. Suzuki wrote that music education begins with “fine character, developing nobility and beauty of character.” Skill follows character; success follows integrity. Nicholas embraces this conviction, guiding his students to grow in patience, resilience, and joy through music.

The “Mother Tongue” approach: learning music as naturally as language, combined with the parent–teacher–student triangle, creates a nurturing environment where music becomes a way of life. Parents play an active role in lessons, helping to build a supportive home atmosphere where children thrive.

Background & Training

A lifetime in music

Born and raised in Yorkshire, England, Nicholas received a rich musical education through both public music programs and private lessons. He studied piano and organ with Gertrude Davey in Harrogate and John Scott Whiteley at York Minster, later holding organ scholarships at Tewkesbury Abbey and Queens’ College, Cambridge. He earned his B.A. and M.A. in music from Cambridge University and pursued postgraduate studies in music therapy at the Guildhall School of Music in London.

In the U.S., Nicholas completed a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Drexel University, blending his passion for music, education, and emotional well-being. His career spans over 40 years of piano teaching, music therapy, and accompaniment work with choirs, churches, and community organizations.

Joy in every lesson

Nicholas continues to find joy in every lesson — from beginners discovering their first notes to advanced students preparing for auditions. His goal is simple: to help each student find their musical voice in a supportive, screen-free environment that fosters growth, discipline, and joy.

  • Nicholas often shares this reflection from Dr. Suzuki’s Nurtured by Love, words that continue to guide him and his students:
  • “Do not hurry… Do not rest… carefully taking a step at a time forward will surely get you there.”
Be Inspired

Guided by Suzuki’s words

“To make a resolution and act accordingly is to live with hope. Confronted with a high mountain, you cannot reach the summit in one stride, but must climb step by step to approach your goal. There may be difficulties and hardships, but not disappointment or despair if you follow the path steadily. Do not hurry… Do not rest… Without stopping without haste, carefully taking a step at a time forward will surely get you there. To commit yourself to untiring patience and strong endurance… is an absolute necessity in education.”
